A Parent’s Guide to Proper School Shoe Fitting — for Winchester Families

Every August, the same scene plays out in shoe shops across the country: a queue of parents, a pile of boxes, and a child wriggling their toes trying to decide if a shoe feels “fine” or just feels new. It’s an easy trap to fall into but a school shoe that isn’t fitted properly can cause real problems for growing feet over a full school year.
At W.J. French & Son, we’ve been fitting children’s feet since 1803. Nine generations in, we’ve learned that a proper fitting isn’t a nice extra it’s the whole point.
Why Fit Matters More Than the Shoe Itself
Children’s feet grow quickly and unevenly, and no two children’s feet are the same, even siblings can need very different width fits. A shoe that looks right on the shelf can still be wrong for the individual foot inside it.
A few things a proper fitting checks for that guesswork misses:
- Length with growing room — enough space for the foot to grow over the term, without so much room that the shoe rubs or the foot slides forward on every step.
- Width — narrow, standard, and wide fits all exist for a reason; a shoe that’s the right length but wrong width can cause blisters, discomfort, or posture issues over time.
- Depth and structure around the ankle and instep — particularly important for active children who are on their feet all day.
- How the shoe behaves once laced or fastened, not just how it looks when first tried on.
Signs Your Child’s School Shoes Don’t Fit Properly
If you’re not sure whether last year’s shoes — or a new pair bought without a fitting — are right, look out for:
- Red marks, rubbing, or blisters after a day at school
- Toes curling or pressing against the front of the shoe
- Your child complaining of tired or achy feet by the end of the day
- Visible gaps at the heel when walking, or the shoe slipping off
- A noticeable size difference between your child’s two feet (very common, and worth fitting for the larger foot)
Why a Fitting Appointment Beats Guessing at Home
It’s tempting to measure at home and order online, especially when time is tight. But foot shape, growth patterns, and how a child actually stands and walks in a shoe are hard to judge without hands-on experience, which is exactly what a proper fitting service is for. Our staff have between 20 plus years of fitting experience between them, and many have trained specifically in fitting for wide, narrow, and orthopaedic needs.
We stock a genuinely wide range of trusted school shoe brands, including Start-rite, Ricosta, Geox, Petasil, Bobux, and Skechers, so if your child needs a specific width or shape, we’re likely to have an option that actually works for their foot, not just the nearest match.
Why Winchester Families Travel to Us
We know a fair few of our school-shoe customers each August come from Winchester and the surrounding villages, Kings Worthy, Sutton Scotney, Twyford, and beyond. It’s a journey we’re always glad families make, and one that tends to be worth it: a proper fitting takes a bit longer than grabbing a box off a shelf, but it means the shoes are right from day one, rather than needing a return trip or a term of discomfort.
We’re based at 39–41 Bedford Place in Southampton, around 20 minutes from Winchester by car, and welcome families in for a fitting any time during the school shoe season. There’s parking directly opposite the shop, so no need to factor in a long walk with tired little feet after a fitting.
Booking a Fitting
If you’d like to bring your child in for a proper school shoe fitting, visit us in-store or get in touch to check current opening hours. August is our busiest month, so where possible, try to come in earlier in the month rather than the final week before term starts.
W.J. French & Son has been fitting shoes for Southampton and the surrounding area — including Winchester, Eastleigh, and beyond — since 1803.
